Despite interdisciplinary work with related fields of research, musicologists are still unable to tell why and how music can trigger emotions. With the Theory of Musical Equilibration, the authors of this paper provide a new explanation of this question. The Theory emerges from Ernst Kurth's teaching and describes the emotional impact of sounds as a result of identifying with the content of will that is encoded in music. According to the theory, through these processes of identification, the listener experiences the music emotionally. In the first and second part of this work the theory is presented, derived and described as a model for practical application. The third part shows ways to apply this model to individual sounds and plausibly justify their emotional impact on the listener.... weniger
