Skepsis und Sozialdemokratie - Mésalliance oder Zukunftsbündnis? Ein Plädoyer im Anschluss an Judith Shklar

Abstract

Judith Shklars "Liberalismus der Furcht“ wird oft als ein Plädoyer für eine Art Nachtwächterliberalismus interpretiert. Im Gegensatz zu dieser Deutung konzentriere ich mich im Folgenden auf die gleichsam sozialdemokratischen Züge von Shklars Liberalismus. Diese Züge, so will ich zeigen, sind eng mit Shklars Auffassung von Skepsis verbunden. Shklars frühe historische Skepsis wendet sich sowohl gegen einen melancholischen Kulturpessimismus wie gegen einen illusionären Fortschrittsglauben. Für Shklars späte politische Skepsis sind zwei Charakteristika entscheidend. Erstens: Im Anschluss an einen terminologischen Vorschlag Hugo Friedrichs lässt sich Shklars politische Skepsis als eine "erschließende" im Unterschied zu einer " zersetzenden" begreifen. Dabei folgt Shklar zweitens dem Begründungsmodell einer "negativen Rechtfertigung" (A. Margalit) jenseits von Relativismus und der Suche nach Letztbegründung. Shklars so zu charakterisierende Skepsis weist eine natürliche Affinität zu einem sozialdemokratisch angereicherten Liberalismus auf. Shklars "Liberalismus der Furcht", der sowohl auf historischer als auch politischer Skepsis beruht, mündet letztlich in eine "Sozialdemokratie der Furcht" (T. Judt).

Judith Shklar's "liberalism of fear" is often interpreted as a night watchman's version of liberalism. In contrast to this interpretation, I will concentrate on the "social democratic“ strains of Shklar's liberalism. Furthermore, I will argue that these strains are closely linked with Shklar’s interpretation of skepticism. In her early work, Shklar sees historical skepticism as the most convincing theoretical answer to the pitfalls both of cultural pessimism and an illusionary belief in progress. For Shklar's later political skepticism two traits are constitutive: First, I take Shklar's skepticism, following Hugo Friedrich's terminological suggestion, as aiming not to shed doubt on reality ("zersetzend"), but as trying to disclose ("erschließend") hitherto unknown possibilities of cruelty and injustice. Second: To justify her political skepticism, Shklar follows the model of a "negative justification" (A. Margalit) beyond relativism and foundationalism. Skepticism, understood in this way, has a natural affinity to a liberalism with strong social democratic inclinations. Thus, Shklar's "liberalism of fear", based on a historical and political skepticism, culminates finally in a "social democracy of fear" (T. Judt).
