Writing and Righting Trauma: Troubling the Autoethnographic Voice

Abstract

Wie können wir sinnvoll und ethisch über Verlust und Trauma sprechen? Dieser Text setzt sich mit der Verwendung traumatischer Erfahrungen in der Autoethnografie auseinander. Es wird über den Einfluss unserer wirren und unvernünftigen Erlebnisse in geordneten und vernünftigen Darstellungen nachgedacht sowie darüber, ob und wie wir teilnehmende Beobachter/innen unserer eigenen Lebensvollzüge werden. Bezeugungs-Praktiken sind durch Diskurs-Normen begrenzt. Damit werden unsere Möglichkeiten beschnitten, Geschichten zu erzählen, die sowohl Wissen als auch Empathie hervorrufen. Durch die wissenschaftlich-gelehrte Stimme des Autors bzw. der Autorin werden wir von den Erfahrungen getrennt, über die wir behaupten zu schreiben, und damit wird die Wirkung unserer Bemühung geschmälert. Dieser Text fragt danach, wie wir uns selbst anders darstellen und beschreiben können.

How do we speak meaningfully and ethically about loss and trauma? This piece grapples with the use of traumatic experiences as the basis of autoethnographic scholarship. It mulls over the impact of telling our messy, unreasonable stories in a tidy, reasonable voice, and the consequences of becoming participant-observers in our own lives. Our testimonial practices are bound by discursive norms that limit our ability to tell performative stories which produce both knowledge and empathy. The scholarly authorial voice insulates us from the experiences we purport to describe and limits the impact of our work. This piece asks how we might write ourselves differently.

¿Como podemos hablar en un sentido significativo y ético sobre pérdidas y trauma? Este artículo lucha con el uso de experiencias traumáticas como la base de investigaciones autoetnográficas.
