Review Essay: Ethnography Lost and Found: Qualitative Methodology Between Science, Art, and Social Powers

Abstract

Das hier besprochene Handbuch der Ethnographie bietet eine sorgfältige Abhandlung des aktuellen Standes dieses Forschungsfeldes – mit großem Enthusiasmus, was die Einsetzbarkeit und den Einsatz qualitativer Methodik angeht, während die Rolle postmodernen Denkens in den gegenwärtigen Sozialwissenschaften eher desorientiert bleibt. Eine Folge ist, dass qualitative Techniken potentiell wichtige Instrumente für journalistische Erzählungen werden, während die alten Ideale der Wissenschaft – einen generalisierbaren Wissensfundus zu schaffen – von der Tagesordnung entfernt sind. Es ist zu hoffen, dass die ethnographischen Traditionen den sozialen Druck der Bürokratisierung und institutioneller Kontrollen auf die zeitgenössischen Sozialwissenschaften überleben werden. Das Handbuch bietet auch einen hervorragenden Überblick über unterschiedliche Forschungstraditionen, die aus der "Chicago School" hervorgegangen sind. Zugleich fehlt jedoch eine Darstellung und Würdigung ethnographischer Ansätze jenseits der britisch-amerikanischen Tradition. Dennoch gelingt mit dem Handbuch eine beachtliche Synthese gegenwärtigen Denkens in der und über die Ethnographie.

The Handbook of Ethnography reviewed here is a thorough treatise of the field as it currently stands—enthusiastically proliferating the uses of qualitative methodology, while remaining disoriented by the role post-modernist thinking has played in the contemporary social sciences. As a result, the uses of qualitative techniques become potential tools for telling journalistic stories, while removing the ideal of science—of creating universal knowledge—from the agenda. It is hoped that the time-honored traditions of ethnography will survive the social pressures of bureaucratization and institutional control over contemporary social sciences. The Handbook also provides an excellent overview of the various research traditions that have emerged from the "Chicago School" of sociological thought. At the same time it fails to represent the ethnographic thought in countries outside of the British-American axis. Nevertheless, the Handbook is a remarkable synthesis of existing thinking in and around of ethnography.

El Manual de Etnografía revisado aquí es un tratado completo del campo como es actualmente, que incrementa entusiastamente el uso de los métodos cualitativos, aunque luce desorientado por el rol que el pensamiento postmoderno ha desempeñado en las ciencias sociales contemporáneas. Como resultado de esto las técnicas cualitativas llegan a ser potenciales instrumentos para contar las historias periodísticas, eliminando de la agenda el ideal científico de crear conocimiento universal. Se espera que las tradiciones honrosas de la etnografía sobrevivan las presiones sociales del control burocrático y de la institucionalización sobre las ciencias sociales contemporáneas. El Manual provee también una excelente visión general de las diferentes tradiciones de investigación que han emergido del pensamiento sociológico de la "Escuela de Chicago". Pero falla en representar el pensamiento etnográfico en países que están fuera del eje Británico-Americano. Sin embargo, el Manual es una síntesis notable del pensamiento existente en y alrededor de la etnografía.
