Review: Peter Berger (2001). Computer und Weltbild. Habitualisierte Konzepte von der Welt der Computer

Abstract

Computer und Weltbild stellt nicht, wie auf dem Klappentext versprochen, eine umfassende Ethnologie der Computerkultur dar. Vielmehr gliedert es sich in vier größere, für sich genommen jeweils durchaus interessante Teile, ohne jedoch dadurch schon einen schlüssigen Gesamtzusammenhang zu ergeben. Etwa ein Drittel des Buchs ist der ausführlichen Konstruktion eines multiperspektivischen Weltbildmodells gewidmet. BERGER greift dabei vor allem auf philosophische, sozialpsychologische und kognitionswissenschaftliche Grundlagen zurück. Die Wahl eines qualitativen Forschungsdesigns wird ebenfalls relativ ausführlich begründet und dargestellt. Eine Neuerung stellt dabei die Verwendung von "Inkubationsfragebögen" dar, die dem eigentlichen qualitativen Interview vorgeschaltet sind. Der dritte Teil des Buches befasst sich mit der Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Informatik, der Informatik als Schulfach – mit einem Schwerpunkt auf Nordrhein-Westfalen – und der alltäglichen Computerkultur. Im Ergebnisteil geht BERGER auf der Grundlage seiner Interviews (N=28) auf das habitualisierte Weltbild von InformatiklehrerInnen ein, bezogen auf den Stellenwert des Computers, die Einschätzung der Wissenschaft Informatik und anhand der Dichotomie "kreativ" vs. "formal" auf unterschiedene Denk- und Lehrstile. Sowohl die Konstruktion eines ausdifferenzierten Weltbildmodells als auch die empirischen Ergebnisse in Bezug auf den Informatikunterricht haben Aussagekraft. Als Gesamtwerk gesehen fehlt dem Buch jedoch etwas der rote Faden.

Computer and worldview is not an ethnology of computer culture as a whole, even though the description on the dustcover promises this. Instead, it consists of four more or less separate parts, each not uninteresting on its own. About a third of the book is dedicated to the construction of a detailed, multi-facetted model of worldviews, based on philosophy, social psychology and cognition science. BERGER also describes and legitimates his choice of qualitative research in detail. A methodological innovation is the use of "incubation questionnaires" preceding the interview itself. The third section of the book informs the reader about the history of computer science, about computer science at school—especially in North Rhine Westphalia—, and about computer culture in everyday life. In the last section he presents empirical results based on interviews (N=28) with computer science schoolteachers. This part concentrates on their habitualized worldview, especially in regard to the role computers play, their view on computer science and the various styles of teaching and thinking, which he classifies as either "creative" or "formal". Both the construction of a differentiated model of worldviews and the empirical results concerning the teaching of computer science in schools have value. Seen as a whole, however, BERGER's work lacks some cohesion.

Aunque lo prometa la sobrecubierta del libro, Informática y visión del mundo no es una etnología de la cultura informática en su conjunto. En cambio, consiste en cuatro partes más o menos separadas, sin interés por si mismas. Cerca de un tercio del libro está dedicado a la construcción de un detallado, multi-facético modelo de perspectivas mundiales, basado en la filosofía, la psicología social y la ciencia de la cognición. Además, BERGER detalladamente describe y legitima su elección de la investigación cualitativa. Una innovación metodológica es el uso de "cuestionarios de incubación" precediendo a la propia entrevista. La tercera sección del libro informa al lector sobre la historia de la informática, sobre la informática en la escuela – especialmente en North Rhine Westphalia –, y sobre la cultura informática en la vida cotidiana. En la última sección el autor presenta los resultados empíricos basados en entrevistas (N=28) con profesores escolares de informática. Esta parte se concentra en sus habituales enfoques mundiales, especialmente respecto al papel que juegan los ordenadores, sus perspectivas sobre la informática y los diversos estilos de la docencia y el pensamiento, que ellos clasifican como "creativo" o "formal". En ambos casos, la construcción de un modelo diferenciado de visión mundial y los resultados empíricos relativos a la enseñanza de la informática en las escuelas, tiene valor. Sin embargo, visto como una totalidad, el mundo de BERGER carece de cierta cohesión.
