Republikanismus und Resilienz: Elemente einer Politischen Theorie der Lebensfähigkeit liberaler Demokratien

Abstract

Ausgehend von Charles Taylors 'republikanischer These' hebt der Artikel eine besondere Stärke der liberalen Demokratie hervor: Aufgrund derjenigen normativen Orientierungen ihrer Bürger:innen, die als funktional notwendige Bedingungen ihrer Existenz vorausgesetzt werden müssen, verfügt sie über eine besondere Quelle gesellschaftlicher Resilienz, durch die sie die gegenwärtigen, durch autoritäre Infragestellungen und Anfeindungen geprägten Herausforderungen bewältigen kann. Hierzu wird ein im Anschluss an Niklas Luhmann sozialtheoretisch reflektierter Begriff gesellschaftlicher Resilienz entwickelt, der normativ-rekonstruktiv im Sinne der Kritischen Theorie Axel Honneths auf die von Taylor als Patriotismus angesprochenen sozialmoralischen Ressourcen angewendet wird. Für diese Ressourcen, erweitert um neorömisch-republikanische Motive, wird der Begriff einer auch für liberale Demokratien notwendigen 'republikanischen Disposition' eingeführt.

Based on Charles Taylor's 'republican thesis', the article highlights a particular strength of liberal democracy: its possession of a special source of societal resilience. This source originates from the normative orientations of its citizens. These orientations are in themselves functionally necessary to assure its very existence and enable liberal democracy to overcome the current challenges brought about by authoritarianism and its various anti-democratic manifestations. For analytical purposes, the article posits a concept of societal resilience based in Niklas Luhmann's social theory. This concept is in turn applied to those socio-moral resources Taylor has framed as 'patriotism'. In doing so, I follow the normative-reconstructive approach as reflected in Axel Honneth’s critical theory. Instead of Taylor's 'patriotism', however, this article develops the concept of a 'republican disposition' in order to denote these resources and furthermore relate them to neo-Roman republican motifs. In conclusion, I content that for the survival of liberal democracies the evolution and consolidation of a robust republican disposition is indispensable.
