The Poetry of Holocaust Survivor Testimony: Towards a New Performative Social Science

Abstract

Performative Sozialwissenschaft gewährt Forschenden eine lange erwünschte Plattform, um über traditionelle Wege der Datenerhebung, Analyse und Präsentation ihrer Ergebnisse hinauszugelangen hin zu einer Art der Beschäftigung mit und Beantwortung von Forschungsfragen, die den besonderen Charakter des Ausgangsmaterials nicht aus den Augen verliert. Damit die sozialwissenschaftliche Stimme Gehör findet, müssen neue Wege erprobt werden, um soziale Wirklichkeit darzustellen; Weg, die alte und rigide Vorstellungen von qualitativer Sozialforschung "entkrampfen" zugunsten moderner und flexibler Ansätze, die auch für die interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit taugen. Indem wir die theoretischen und paradigmatischen Grenzen unserer Arbeit neu definieren, können wir andere einladen, die Welt aus zusätzlichen Blickwinkeln zu betrachten. In diesem Beitrag werden die Potenziale eines performativen Ansatzes genutzt, um die Lebenserfahrungen einer Überlebenden des Holocaust vorzustellen, zu denen auch die Internierung im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz-Birkenau gehörte. Aus der visuellen und textlichen Reise eines "Forschungsgesprächs" mit der Überlebenden, in die auch Fotografien und Gedichte eingegangen waren, ist eine "Foto-Text-Montage" entstanden, die eine auch empathische Beschäftigung mit deren Zeugnis und Vermächtnis ermöglichen soll. Ich bemühe mich dabei um ein neues Nebeneinanderstellen von Bildern und Worten mit dem Ziel eines besseren Nachvollzugs der Beziehung zwischen ihr und mir, des Forschungsprozesses und seiner Ergebnisse. Es werden Aspekte von Forschung als Prozess des chronologischen, zeitlichen und räumlichen Vertrautwerdens mit den Daten ebenso behandelt wie die Bedeutung der Präsentation (Formate, Layout). Und es wird auf diese Weise sichtbar, was in traditionellen Ansätzen zumeist unsichtbar bleibt – die eigene "Reise" als Forscherin und die Einsichten, die in ihrem Verlauf gewonnen wurden.

Performative Social Science provides the research scientist with a much needed platform to move beyond traditional approaches to data collection, analysis and the presentation of study findings towards a response to research questions that closely resonates with the raw materials at hand. For the Performative Social Scientist's voice to be heard, new ways must be found to consider how best to represent the social world, relaxing longstanding and rigid qualitative research frameworks in favour of more contemporary and flexible approaches to working that welcome inter-disciplinary practice. By re-defining the theoretical and paradigmatic boundaries of our studies we can then encourage others to consider a range of alternative positions from which to view the world. The paper embraces the potential such a platform offers by presenting one Holocaust survivor's lived experiences of these extraordinary events including internment in Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Through a visual and textual journey that employs photographs and poetic representations derived from one "research conversation" with the survivor, a "photo-textual montage" aims to engender a more empathic response to survivor testimony. The paper also attempts a novel juxtaposition of images and words to present a richer understanding of the researcher's relationship with the survivor, the research process and research outputs. In effect, the paper maps aspects of the research process in "coming to know" the data in chronological, temporal and spatial frames whilst emphasising the importance of presentation style, format and layout. This paper makes visible what is often invisible in more traditional approaches—the researchers own personal journey and the insights that this affords.

La ciencia social performativa provee al investigador científico con un muy necesitado trampolín que le permite moverse mas allá de las perspectivas tradicionales en la recolección de datos, análisis y en la presentación de conclusiones, hacia una respuesta a preguntas de investigación que resuena en forma cercana con los materiales crudos a mano. Para que la voz del científico social performativo sea escuchada, se deben encontrar nuevas vías que consideren cual es la mejor manera de representar el mundo social, relajando los prolongados y rígidos marcos de la investigación cualitativa a favor de perspectivas de trabajo más contemporáneas y flexibles que den la bienvenida a la práctica interdisciplinaria. Al redefinr los limites teóricos y paradigmáticos de nuestros estudios, podemos animar a otros a considerar una gama de posiciones alternativas desde las cuales ver el mundo. Este artículo adopta el potencial que este medio ofrece presentando las experiencias vvidas por un superviviente del Holocausto de estos extraordinarios eventos incluyendo su internamiento en el campo de concentración de Auschwitz-Birkenau. Usando un viaje visual y textual que emplea fotografías y representaciones poéticas derivadas de una "conversación investigadora" con el superviviente, un "montaje foto-textual" se enfoca a producir una respuesta más empática al testimonio del superviviente. Este artículo intenta también una novedosa yuxtaposición de imágenes y palabras que presentan una comprensión más rica de la relación del investigador con el superviviente, y del proceso y los resultados de la investigación. En efecto, el artículo traza un mapa de aspectos del proceso de investigación tratando que "se conozcan" los datos en su marco cronológico, temporal y espacial a la vez que hace énfasis en la importancia del estilo, el formato y las capas de la presentación. Este artículo hace visible lo que es a menudo invisible en enfoques más tradicionales – el propio viaje personal de los investigadores y el entendimiento que proporciona.
