Transnational Refugees: The Transformative Role of Art?

Abstract

In diesem Beitrag beschäftige ich mich mit der transformativen Rolle der Kunst und dem methodologischen Ansatz des Arbeitens mit Künstler/innen, um ethnografische Forschung mit Flüchtlingen und Asylbewerber/innen zu betreiben. Indem ich mögliche Verbindungslinien zwischen Ethnografie (Soziologie) und kunstbasierten Praktiken (Fotos, Installationen, Texte) exploriere, komme ich zu dem Vorschlag, dass eine Kombination aus Biografie/Narration (Ethnografie) und Kunst (Mimesis) "potenzielle Räume" der Transformation eröffnen könnte. Konkret beziehe ich mich auf Walter BENJAMINs (1992) The Storyteller, um den methodologischen Nutzen der Kombination von Biografie/des Narrativen mit künstlerischen Praktiken (Ethno-Mimesis) für "potenzielle Räume" zu veranschaulichen, reflexive/sichere Räume für Dialoge und Erzählungen, die sich um transnationale Identitäten, Heimat und Zugehörigkeit entspinnen. Ebenfalls diskutiert werden die erforderliche methodologische Neuorientierung im Kontext von Migration, Erniedrigung/Anpassung und Menschenrechten (LINDNER 2006), die Bedeutung von Kunst für Prozesse der sozialen Inklusion sowie die vitale Bedeutung kreativer Räume für Dialoge und performative Praxis im Rahmen partizipativer Methodologien.

This paper focuses upon the transfor­m­ative role of art and the methodological approach of working with artists to conduct ethnographic research with refugees and asylum seekers. In exploring the space or hyphen between ethnog­raphy (sociology) and arts based practice (photos, in­stallations, textual practice) I suggest that the combination of biography/narrative (ethnography) and art (mimesis) becomes a "potential space" for transformative possibilities. More specifically, draw­ing upon Walter BENJAMIN's (1992) The Story­teller I will discuss the methodological contribution of combining biography/narrative with art forms (ethno-mimesis) in creating a "potential space", a reflective/safe space for dialogue and narratives to emerge around the themes of transnational identities, home and belonging. The importance of renewing methodologies for the work we do within the area of forced migration, humiliation, "egaliza­tion" and human rights (LINDNER, 2006), the role of the arts in processes of social inclusion, and the vital importance for creating spaces for dialogue and performative praxis through participatory methodologies are also discussed.

Este manuscrito se enfoca en el rol transformador del arte y del enfoque metodológico de trabajar con artistas al conducir investigación etnográfica con refugiados y buscadores de asilo. Al explorar el espacio o guión existente entre la etnografía (sociología) y la práctica basada en el arte (fotos, instalaciones, práctica textual) sugiero que la combinación de biografía/narrativa (etnografía) y arte (mimesis) se convierte en un "espacio potencial" para las posibilidades transformadoras. Más específicamente, basándome en El contador de cuentos de Walter BENJAMIN (1992) discuto la contribución metodológica de combinar biografía/narrativa con formas artísticas (etno-mimesis) al crear un "espacio potencial", un espacio seguro/profundo para que el diálogo y las narrativas emerjan alrededor de los temas de identidades trasnacionales, el hogar y la pertenencia. Se discuten también la importancia de renovar las metodologías para el trabajo que hacemos en el área de migración forzada, humillación, "egalización" y derechos humanos (LINDNER 2006), el papel de las artes en los procesos de inclusión social y la importancia vital de crear espacios para el diálogo y la praxis preformativa a través de metodologías participativas.
