Review: Heather D'Cruz & Martyn Jones (2004). Social Work Research—Ethical and Political Contexts

Abstract

Das Buch Social Work Research – Ethical and Political Contexts ist als Einführungstext konzipiert, der direkt aus der Lehrtätigkeit beider Autoren entspringt. Als solches ist es ein gutes Buch, das die Breite qualitativen und quantitativen Forschens kompetent abdeckt. Der Text ergreift klar Position für Randgruppen und für "Unterprivilegierte". Es ist damit politisch nicht neutral, allerdings wird die politische Parteinahme auch nicht übertrieben. Das Buch hat überwiegend einen exzellenten Standard. Die Gliederung des Textes ist gut und jedes Kapitel wird durch eine Einleitung am Anfang und eine Zusammenfassung am Ende übersichtlich strukturiert. Es hat Spaß gemacht, dieses Buch zu rezensieren – und manchmal war es stimulierend, aber dann und wann auch frustrierend, weil es zuweilen weniger gehalten hat als ich mir versprochen hatte.

This book is about doing social work research and comes straight from its authors’ practices as social work teachers. Well written, it tackles most of the wide-ranging topics in qualitative and quantitative research. Not politically neutral, the book has a clear bias, advocating for the marginalised and dispossessed. Its politics are not overbearing, however, and the quality of much of the material is excellent. It was a great pleasure to review this stimulating and interesting book, although frustrating, too, because it made me at times hopeful that it would go further in its range and coverage than it did. In sum, it is a well structured book and each chapter has an introduction and a final summary of the main points.

Este libro trata sobre la investigación en trabajo social y resulta directamente de las prácticas de sus autores como profesores de trabajo social. Con una buena redacción, aborda muchos de los tópicos en la amplia gama de la investigación cualitativa y cuantitativa. El libro no es políticamente neutral y toma una posición clara a favor de lo marginal y lo desposeído. Si bien las políticas propuestas no son las dominantes, la calidad de buena parte del material es excelente. Reseñar este libro ha sido un placer interesante y estimulante, aunque a veces también frustrante, debido a que en ocasiones me hizo albergar esperanzas de que iría mas lejos en su alcance y cobertura de lo que fue. En suma, es un libro bien estructurado en el que cada capítulo tiene una introducción y un resumen final con los puntos principales.
