Der Cyber-Mythos: Über das Internet jenseits von Gut und Böse

Abstract

Die Frage nach Cyber-Utopie bzw. -Dystopie markiert die äußeren Grenzen des im Diskurs über das Internet Sagbaren. Mit meinem Beitrag plädiere ich dafür, in der Debatte darüber, ob das Internet und die Digitalisierung allgemein eher utopisches oder dystopisches Potential haben, eine andere Perspektive einzunehmen. Im Fokus meines Beitrags steht deshalb nicht die Frage, welche Potentiale das Internet bieten könnte, sondern die Frage nach den Grundlagen des Internets und nach den Bedingungen, die das Internet hervorgebracht hat. Dabei vertrete ich die These, dass das Internet weder utopisches noch dystopisches Potential hat, sondern als Mythos funktioniert. Um diese These zu belegen, zeichne ich in einem ersten Schritt die Grundlinien und wissenschaftstheoretischen Implikationen der Kybernetik als ideologische Grundlage des Internets nach. Mit Referenz auf Armin Nassehis Theorie der digitalen Gesellschaft zeige ich, dass kybernetisches Gedankengut die Basis der Digitalisierung und dass das Internet eine mythische Funktion für die digitale Gesellschaft übernimmt.

The question of the cyber-utopian and -dystopian implications of the Internet marks the outer limits of what may be said in the discourse concerning the Internet. I argue for the need to take a different perspective in the debate concerning whether the Internet, and digitalization in general, feature utopian or dystopian potential. Therefore, my article does not debate the capabilities the Internet could offer. Instead, it discusses the ideological foundations of the Internet and the conditions responsible for its development. It is argued that the Internet, rather, functions as a myth in that it features both utopian and/or dystopian potentiality. In order to prove this thesis, I first draw attention to the basic characteristics and epistemilogical implications of cybernetics, showing that cybernetics is indeed the ideological foundation of the Internet. With reference to Armin Nassehi's Theorie der digitalen Gesellschaft, it is shown that cybernetic ideas provide the basis for digitalization and that the Internet functions as a myth for digital society.
