This article analyses the subjectivity of the sociologically under explored knowledge workers in the digital economy. Building on 40 original interviews and discourse analysis, the article identifies distinctive forms of subjectivity among so-called "tech workers" that point to a self beyond “artistic critique” and the “entreployee”. The new forms of subjectivity manifest in: 1) a conflictive image of society, which is structured by mindfulness vis-à-vis social inequalities and a return of social critique, 2) mindfulness vis-à-vis psycho-social and ecological resources, 3) a lifestyle of the general that mobilises ordinary as well as inclusive tastes. These three forms of subjectivity signal new normative orientations and a departure from the force fields of the artistic critique and the entreployee. At the same time, it is argued that this subjectivation process generates new forms of power and power relations. The article critically discusses the formation of yet another spirit of capitalism as well as the emergence of moral class boundaries. The mindful-moral self of tech workers is interpreted as an ambivalent subjectivation process, which holds potential for emancipation as well as for distinction and the reproduction of relations of domination.... view less
