Crypto Parties and the Creation of Anonymity and Privacy

Abstract

In this contribution, I am taking a look at a distinct practice of public engagement, namely Crypto Parties. I investigate how anonymity practices are transferred from "experts" to "laypeople". Crypto Parties are politically significant practices, in which knowledge about anonymity is spread and circulated among different groups. The political significance of these practices does not lie in its direct impact on for example state policies, but in the way in which it is able to create dispersed anonymity practices and alter everyday behaviour and knowledge about data security and privacy practices. The empirical study on Crypto Parties is just a first step in helping us to understand this cultural and political practice as a practice of generating knowledge about anonymity.

In diesem Beitrag untersuche ich sogenannte "Crypto Partys" als eine spezifische Form von "citizen engagement" im Zusammenhang mit digitaler Überwachung und dem Schutz der Privatsphäre. Auf Grundlage einer explorativen ethnographischen Forschung argumentiere ich, dass Crypto Partys zwar ihrem eigenen Anspruch, egalitäre Räume des Lernens und Lehrens zu schaffen, nicht immer gerecht werden, dass jedoch das Entstehen von Hierarchien innerhalb dieser Praktiken kritisch reflektiert wird. Die politische Signifikanz von Crypto Partys liegt nicht in dem Bezugspunkt zu staatlichen Aktivitäten, sondern im "diffusen" Transfer von Wissen über Anonymität und digitale Sicherheitspraktiken. Dieser Beitrag ist damit ein erster Schritt in Richtung eines besseren Verständnisses von Crypto Partys als kulturelle und politische Praxis zur Herstellung von Wissen über Anonymität.
