Here, a culturalization of orientalized gender and sexuality takes place. These processes are discursively intertwined with unacknowledged deficits of Western emancipation: with the ambivalent aftermath of the sexual revolution, the incomplete women’s and homosexual movements, the creeping dissolution of the heteronormative nuclear family and the neoliberal call to become ‘sexual entrepreneurs’ of one self. After providing a genealogy of problematic concepts of culturalization, the second part of the essay confronts Occidental narratives of superiority with migrant counter-narratives from popular culture. Finally, the results of the essay are placed in the context of sociological studies of Occidental regimes of love and sexuality and an attempt will be made to capture some feedback-effects in the confrontation of self-perception and perception by others.... view less
