Die gerechtigkeitsproduktive Funktion politischer Konflikte: Judith Shklars konfliktiver Liberalismus

Abstract

Der Liberalismus wird aktuell unter der Perspektive seines Versagens als Paradigma einer progressiven Politik diskutiert. Globale Ungerechtigkeit und politische Konflikte stehen in diametralem Gegensatz zu seinem ursprünglichen Versprechen der gleichen Freiheit aller. Auf der Ebene politischer Theoriebildung gilt diese Kritik primär der derzeit prominentesten liberalen Theorie, John Rawls' idealer Gerechtigkeitstheorie. Ich werde die methodologische und konzeptuelle Kritik nicht-idealer und realistischer Theoriebildung bezüglich der Defizite von Rawls' Theorie kritisch diskutieren und zwei Defizite dieser Art der Theoriebildung feststellen: die Konzeptualisierung von Macht und Konflikt sowie ihre Unfähigkeit der Darstellung von Ungerechtigkeit. Davon ausgehend verteidige ich Judith Shklars Liberalismus der Furcht als eine Konzeptualisierung des Liberalismus, deren konfliktives Verständnis des Politischen einen Fokus auf Ungerechtigkeit eröffnet sowie einen Modus des Umgangs mit dieser entwickelt. Shklar wendet das konfliktive Potenzial ihres Liberalismus positiv und entwickelt so eine progressive Perspektive auf politischen Konflikt als notwendiger Komponente des Umgangs mit Ungerechtigkeit.

Liberalism is currently being accused of having failed as a theory of progressive politics. Global injustice and political conflict contradict liberalism's initial promise, the establishment of equal liberty for all. On the level of political theorizing, this critique is primarily levelled against the currently most prominent liberal theory, John Rawls's ideal theory of justice. I will critically discuss the methodological and conceptual criticisms put forward by non-ideal and realist theory against Rawls and identify two shortcomings in his approach: the conceptualization of power and conflict and the inability to address injustice. Drawing on this, I will defend Shklar's liberalism of fear as a reconceptualization of liberal theory, which not only allows for a conflictual vision of the political, but also for a focus on injustice and means to address it. Her conflictual liberalism thus develops a progressive perspective on political conflict as a necessary aspect of addressing injustice.
