Multilocal lifestyles are part of a larger social trend of late modernity: the archipelization of the lifeworld. Most people still live in a more or less routinized living space. They are therefore sedentary. But today they are more mobile - in everyday life and in their biographies - and more networked. As a result, these living spaces contain a larger number of places - some functionally or emotionally important, others more insignificant - that form what can be called an archipelago. In order to analyse the Archipelisierung der Lebenswelt 29 form and structure of the archipelago, one must pay attention to the following parameters: sense of place, centrality, homogeneity, island-sea relationship, temporality and multidimensionality. The archipelago contributes to the re-conceptualization of spatial development by considering together i.a. place as a material mesh of multidimensional networks, the presential economy instead of only the economy at the main place of residence, the proximity of offers and services to all places of living and mobility, the sustainability of mobility and the space-time fragmentation of daily life and of dwelling.... view less
