Heimvorteil Putin? Die mediale Darstellung des russischen Präsidenten während der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2018 - eine Inhaltsanalyse

Abstract

Egal ob Demokratie, Autokratie oder Diktatur: Für Regierungen der Gegenwart gibt es kaum eine bessere Werbung als die Ausrichtung von sportlichen Großevents im eigenen Land. Vor allem für Autokraten und Diktatoren sind "der Fußball und der mit seiner Hilfe zusätzlich befeuerte Nationalismus ein willkommenes Mittel, um die eigene Größe zu zelebrieren" (Ehrhart 2014: 189). Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht deshalb anhand der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2018 in Russland, wie solche Events sportpolitisch wirken und wie sie von Machthabern genutzt werden. Konkret umgesetzt wurde dies anhand einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse, die die Berichterstattung der Deutschen Presse-Agentur (dpa) mit den offiziellen Mitteilungen aus dem Kreml vergleicht. Ein zentrales Ergebnis: Russlands Präsident Putin ist ein großer Gewinner der Weltmeisterschaft - und das, obwohl er während des Turniers kaum zu sehen war.

No matter if democracy, autocracy or dictatorship: There is barely a better promotion than a big sports event in the own country. Especially for autocrats and dictators "football and the so fueled nationalism is an acceptable gift to present und celebrate the own greatness" (Ehrhart 2014: 189). This article investigates by reference to the Football World Cup 2018 in Russia, how suchlike events appear and how they get used by governments or authorities. These questions are answered with the aid of a qualitative content analysis, which compares the coverage of the German news agency dpa and the official communication by the Moscow Kremlin. One key result: The Russian president Putin is a winner of the World Cup - although he was only marginally present in the public eye during the tournament.
