Discussions about the normativity of social research often start from the assumption that values and facts are external to each other. On the basis of (neo-)pragmatic considerations, this contribution proposes the inevitability of values in the production of social science knowledge as a possible starting point for a sociology of social research. Epistemic values enable coordination and evaluation in the research process. These values are not a question of subjective preferences, but "objective". They must prove themselves in the social execution of research to cope with uncertain situations, and are available intersubjectively as historically shaped resources for action, which can be criticized. The question of the values that shape research processes would thus have to be answered empirically (not "normatively"). These values are immanent in science and cannot be separated from broader or deeper normative orders, which are called conventions in the approach of the sociology of conventions. In French neopragmatism, these conventions have been examined as everyday resources for criticism and legitimacy. The discussion of epistemic values therefore inevitably leads to the question of critique, which in turn cannot be answered with reference to a transcendent truth, but only concretely and "realistically".... view less
