This study takes a spatial perspective and thus focuses on a barely discussed aspect. It asks for the reasons, why right-wing populists are successful in some regions while they are not in others. In the first part of this expertise the current state of research in English- and German-language literature on right-wing populism and space in Western Europe is reviewed. The review shows that factors such as the poverty rate, visible diversity in public spaces, the past electoral success of right-wing extremist parties as well as the local population’s commitment to the church can contribute to explaining the electoral success of right-wing populists. In the second part, the German counties and unincorporated cities are typed by using data on social structure and infrastructure, election results and survey data. The result shows that the AfD is successful in economically challenged places, particularly if a relatively big part of the population shares xenophobic attitudes. Subsequently eight cities were examined on small-scale level regarding socio-structural correlations with the electoral success of the AfD.... view less
