Der Computer und die mit ihm verbundenen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien sind spätestens mit dem Aufkommen der Mikroelektronik Anfang der 1970er-Jahre zu entscheidenden Faktoren der Entwicklung moderner Industriegesellschaften geworden. Im Verlauf der 1980er-Jahre diffundierten Computer und neue Medien in nahezu alle Bereiche der Gesellschaft – angefangen von der Arbeit über die Formen der sozialen Kommunikation, die politische Kultur, die Bildung, den Konsum und die Freizeit bis hinein in die individuellen Lebensstile. Der „Informationsgesellschaft“ (ein Begriff, der nicht zufällig ab etwa 1980 populär wurde) hat die zeithistorische Forschung bislang eher wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Mit Blick auf die wichtigsten Phasen und Zäsuren diskutiert der Aufsatz mögliche Perspektiven einer Zeitgeschichte der Informationsgesellschaft. Plädiert wird dabei für eine integrierende gesellschaftsgeschichtliche Analyse des mit dem Computer verbundenen Wandels sowie der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Kontexte.... view less

Since the emergence of microelectronics in the early 1970s, computers and related information and communication technologies have become crucial for the development of modern industrial societies. During the 1980s, computers and new media pervaded almost all areas of society – including work, forms of social communication, political culture, education, consumption, leisure, and individual lifestyles. Until now, contemporary history studies paid little attention to ‘information society’ (by no coincidence, the term became popular around 1980). With an eye to the most important stages and milestones, the text discusses possible perspectives of a contemporary history of information society. It advocates an integrated social historical analysis of computer-related changes in relation to economic, social and cultural contexts.... view less
