Wider das Scheitern der Demokratie: Claude Leforts politischer Realismus im Spiegel der neueren Forschung

Abstract

Claude Leforts politische Philosophie kann mit ihrem Nachdenken über die Fragilität und geschichtliche Kontingenz der Demokratie neue Impulse für aktuelle Fragestellungen zur Gefährdung der Demokratie in der Gegenwart geben. Für Lefort repräsentiert die Demokratie als eine Möglichkeit zur Selbstorganisation der Gesellschaft, die jedoch nicht prinzipiell vor ihrem Scheitern bewahrt werden kann. Er verbindet damit auf einzigartige Weise Wertschätzung mit Kritik der modernen Demokratie. Der Artikel verortet Leforts Ansatz innerhalb des Diskurses der politischen Philosophie der Linken und diskutiert drei neuere Deutungen seiner Philosophie durch Bernard Flynn, Oliver Marchart und Andreas Wagner. Dabei wird Leforts Verhältnis zur Hermeneutik und Geschichtsphilosophie ebenso zum Thema gemacht wie seine Beziehung zum Postfundamentalismus und zur Diskurstheorie.

Claude Lefort's political philosophy highly appreciates modern democracy, without being uncritical about it. According to him, the latter represents a society's opportunity to organize itself although this opportunity cannot ultimately be prevented from failure. Especially in the context of democracy's contingency, Lefort's philosophy can give new impetus to recent debates on internal threats to democratic power. The article classifies Lefort's approach within left-wing philosophy and scrutinizes three recent interpretations of his philosophy by Bernard Flynn, Oliver Marchart and Andreas Wagner. Lefort's understanding of hermeneutics and philosophy of history are being considered, as well as his relation to post-foundationalism and discourse theory.
