Dominaciones y denominaciones: Medio Oriente, países árabes e Islam

Abstract

El artículo trata de las denominaciones de "Oriente", "Medio Oriente", "países árabes" e "Islam", habituales en la prensa y en escritos académicos. La historia de cada término muestra que su uso actual es de origen europeo (“occidental”), y no está desvinculado de la hegemonía europea y del "orientalismo" denunciando por Edward Said. Inconscientemente, la terminología europea fue adoptada por los mismos "orientales".

Analyzing the historical background of the denominations "East", "Middle East", "Arab countries" and "Islam", of common use in media and academic writings, the author of this article reveals how much their current use is of European ("western") wrought, fused to European hegemony and to the "Orientalism" denounced by Edward Said. These European terms have been unconsciously adopted by the "Orientals" themselves.
