Europa: la batalla por las memorias

Abstract

En este artículo, la autora expone una de las paradojas que recorre actualmente a Europa. Por una parte, y en el marco de un proceso de creciente articulación económica y política, reaparecen en el Viejo Continente fantasmas del pasado a los que se creía ya definitivamente enterrados: racismo, xenofobia, discriminación, violencia contra minorías, etcétera. Diversos grupos y movimientos de ultraderecha adquieren un importante auge entre la juventud y un notable peso en las urnas. Sin embargo, Europa se confronta también con las viejas heridas de su pasado. Así, Austria, Francia y Alemania, entre otros países, rescatan verdades olvidadas y reinterpretan su historia a la luz del presente. El dilema es, entonces: ¿Qué tendrá mayor peso: el olvido o el vigor de la memoria?

In this article, the author explores one of Europe's paradoxes today. Amid the weaving of an intricate political and economic tapestry, the Old Continent is assailed by ghosts from the past that were thought long interred: racism, xenophobia, discrimination, violence against minority groups, etc. Ultra-right wing movements and group gain strength amongst young people, and move forward in the polls. Yet old wounds have also resurfaced in European countries. Foremostly Austria, France and Germany, are plunging in to rescue forgotten truths from their history, to read them under the light of the present. The question is, what will prevail: oblivion or the refunding spirit of memory?
