Racismo: los coqueteos con la doncella

Abstract

¿Hay racismo en México? Si bien constitucionalmente no se acepta la diferenciación entre razas, en la realidad la noción de raza ha estado presente en la oscuridad de la conciencia del país, y ha incidido en las peores experiencias autoritarias. El autor afirma que el racismo se ha disfrazado de "enfrentamiento cultural" o de "reivindicación territorial"; el mestizaje ha remarcado "el espíritu de una raza original" que se ha traducido tanto en un racismo discriminador como en una defensa a ultranza de los pueblos y comunidades indígenas. En ambos casos se excluye al otro y se construyen fronteras invisibles, pero permanentes, entre los seres humanos.

Is there racism in Mexico? Constitutionally there are no racial distinctions, however the notion of race lurks in the shadows of the country's consciousness and shows its face in the vilest authoritarian expressions. The author contends that racism in Mexico is camouflaged as "cultural conflict" or "territorial repossession"; the crossing of the races has reinforced the "spirit of a primeval race", and this concept translates either into severe discrimination, or extreme advocacy of the native people and communities. In either case, the "other" is ostracized, and invisible but permanent barriers are raised between human beings.
