Zwischen Natalität und 'Muselmann' - Hannah Arendt und das Andere der Ordnung

Abstract

Obwohl Hannah Arendt die Sozialwissenschaften ihrer Zeit geringschätzte, kann ihr Denken sozial- und gesellschaftstheoretisch fruchtbar gemacht werden, sofern man nicht allein auf Arendts trennscharfe Unterscheidungen (zum Beispiel von Macht und Gewalt) fokussiert, sondern auch ihren Sinn für Paradoxa, Übergänge, Aporien und Brüche in den Blick nimmt - und bisweilen mit Arendt über Arendt hinaus oder gegen sie denkt. Unter dieser Prämisse untersucht der Aufsatz zwei eng miteinander verschränkte Schlüsselthemen Arendts: die Grundbedingung der Natalität und das Vermögen zu Handeln auf der einen, den ‚Muselmann‘ als Endprodukt des Konzentrationslagers auf der anderen Seite. Beide - Natalität und 'Muselmann' - markieren auf ihre Weise die Grenzen und Abgründe politischer Ordnung(sbildung). Im Ergebnis wird deutlich, dass einerseits Arendts Bild vom Lager die eigentliche Untertanenfiktion des Nationalsozialismus verstellt, während der 'Muselmann' sich als Sozialfigur der Gegenwart verstehen lässt. Andererseits ist Natalität ebenso Grund beziehungsweise Garant von Welt, wie sie deren Verhängnis werden kann.

Even if Hannah Arendt disregarded the social sciences of her time, her thinking can be made productive with regard to social theory, provided that one does not only focus on Arendt's precise distinctions (e.g. between power and violence), but also takes into account her sense of paradoxes, transitions, aporia and fractures - and occasionally thinks with Arendt beyond Arendt or against herself. On this premise, the essay investigates two of Arendt’s key issues which are strongly intertwined: the human condition of natality together with the faculty of action and the ‘Muselman’ as the final product of the concentration camp. Both - natality and 'Muselman' - in their own particular way mark the boundaries and abysses of (creating) political order. As a result it becomes clear that on the one hand Arendt’s image of the camp obstructs the actual subject fiction [Untertanenfiktion] of National Socialism, whereas the 'Muselman' can be recognized as a social figure of our time. Natality, on the other hand, is the world’s basis and guarantor just as it can become its undoing.
