Entre la obediencia y la libertad: una mujer española del siglo XVII

Abstract

El siguiente artículo muestra cómo los procesos inquisitoriales auxilian en el análisis histórico y sociológico de la sociedad española (y sus colonias). En particular, estos documentos nos permiten conocer las vidas y pensamientos de personas cuya existencia no es registrada en otro tipo de fuentes. Tal es el caso de las mujeres, sobre todo las de estratos bajos. El proceso aquí presentado trata de una de ellas: Theresa Corella. Su caso nos permite atisbar algunas de las posiciones socialmente aceptadas abiertas a las mujeres de su época, así como las maneras en que éstas podían combinarse para lograr espacios de libertad. También posibilita el análisis de la forma en que los poderes eclesiásticos y genéricos trataron de controlar a estas mujeres.

The object of this article is to show some of the advantages of using inquisitorial trials in historical and sociological research pertaining to Spain (and its colonies). In particular, these documents allow us to learn about the lives and thoughts of people whose existence is not recorded in other sources. Such is the case of women, particularly those of lower strata. The trial presented here deals with one of those women: Theresa Corella. Her case enables us to see some of the socially acceptable positions available to women during this period, as well as the ways in which these could be combined to achieve greater freedom. It also allows us to analyze how ecclesiastical and generic powers tried to control these women.
