Se ubica a la llamada Web 2.0 como un fenómeno impulsado en buena medida por el paradigma dela sociedad de la información y como un término creado desde una perspectiva fundamentalmente mercadológica. Se concibe al conjunto de servicios y aplicaciones de la Web 2.0, como un grupo heterogéneo en el que coexisten visiones económicas que forman parte de la economía digital, al lado de enfoques que privilegian aspectos sociales y degeneración colectiva de conocimiento.
