Die Herausforderungen von Globalisierung und europäischer Integration wie auch eine
verstärkte Regionalisierung führten in den letzten Jahrzehnten zu einer Neubewertung von Metropolregionen. In Deutschland gaben insbesondere die MKRO-Leitbilder (2006) Anlass, die Rolle der Grenzregionen im Kontext des Metropolendiskurses zu überdenken. Die metropolitanen Potenziale der Grenzregionen werden jedoch bei Weitem noch nicht ausgenutzt. Dies gilt insbesondere in Bezug auf die grenzüberschreitende Raumentwicklung. Das Konzept der Metropolitanen Grenzregionen (MGR) könnte einen Erfolg versprechenden Weg zur Intensivierung der grenzüberschreitenden Kooperation und territorialen Integration aufzeigen. Voraussetzung ist, Metropolisierungsstrategien über Schlüsselmaßnahmen offensiv voranzutreiben und die bestehenden Kooperationsstrukturen im Sinne einer "metropolitanen" Governance weiterzuentwickeln.... view less

In recent decades the challenges of globalisation, European integration and strengthened
regionalisation have led to a reassessment of metropolitan regions. In Germany the guiding principles issued by the Conference of Ministers for Spatial Planning in 2006 provided a stimulus to rethink the role of border regions in the context of the metropolitan discourse. The metropolitan potentials of border regions are far from fully exploited. This is particularly true in relation to cross-border spatial development. The concept of metropolitan border regions could be a promising way of intensifying cross-border cooperation and territorial integration. A precondition is that metropolisation strategies are offensively pursued using key measures and that existing structures of cooperation are further developed towards 'metropolitan' governance.... view less
