Given the marginal importance of exports in the French economy, as well as the stabilizing role of domestic demand, France absorbed the shock of the financial and economic crisis better than other states did. However, at the moment, some characteristics of France’s economic system seem to curb recovery. Indeed, structural deficits, the insufficient competitiveness of Small and Medium sized Enterprises, as well as the weakness of French exports, herald a low production level and a high unemployment rate for the years to come. But in the long term, the outlook for France’s performance is positive given its strong service sector, its population growth as well as advantages of the locations for example related to its internal infrastructure. So that France can play to its strengths in the long-term, the state budget as well as social spending must be consolidated and more investment must be brought about in the areas of research and education.... view less

Grâce à une économie peu tournée vers les exportations et au rôle stabilisateur de sa demande intérieure, la France a mieux réussi que d'autres États à amortir le choc de la crise économique et financière. Néanmoins, certaines caractéristiques de son système économique freinent aujourd’hui la reprise. Du fait de déficits structurels, comme l’insuffisante compétitivité des petites et moyennes entreprises ainsi que de la faiblesse des exportations françaises, un faible niveau production et un taux de chômage élevé devraient rester la règle dans les années à venir. À long terme cependant, différents facteurs devraient permettre à la France d'améliorer sa compétitivité, notamment la vigueur de son secteur tertiaire, une croissance démographique positive et certains avantages du site économique, tels que des infrastructures bien développées. Pour jouer de ses atouts à long terme, la France devra consolider les dépenses publiques et investir davantage dans la recherche et l’éducation.... view less
