Der Goffmensch: Überlegungen zu einer dramatologischen Anthropologie

Abstract

The works of Erving Goffman are being read and interpreted differently. The reconstruction of Goffmann's implicit understanding of the human condition contributes to the comprehension of his writings: Goffmann's interest is the interactional order as a principal coping problem for the actor. This actor, labelled here as 'the Goff-Man', must constantly interpret situations, select action alternatives and applicate sign and symbol systems. The fact that he or she usually does this in a routine manner does not change the need that he or she cannot help choosing constantly. Seen from a culture theoretical perspective, the 'Goff-Man' can be termed an 'eccentric problem solver'. Viewed phenomenologically, he or she is a kind of 'existentialist social virtuoso'. According to his or her logic of action, he or she appears as a 'proto-political strategist'. The relevant type of actor for Goffman thus becomes central for a dramatological understandig of human coexistence.

In seinem Aufsatz geht der Autor dem Menschenbild Goffmans, vom Verfasser kurz "Goffmensch" benannt, nach. Im ersten Abschnitt zeigt er die unterschiedlichen wissenschaftstheoretischen Einschätzungen der Soziologie Goffmans auf. Der Autor selbst wertet Goffman in erster Linie als Sozialforscher; eine Anthropologie Goffmans hat nach Maßgabe des Verfassers lediglich impliziten Charakter. Kernthema des Goffmenschen ist das hinlänglich gelingende Zusammenleben als ein dauerhaftes beziehungsweise sich andauernd wiederholendes Problem für jeden einzelnen Interaktionsteilnehmer. Anders herum gesehen sieht Goffman die Interaktionsordnung als eine strukturell auferlegte Deutungs- und Bewältigungsaufgabe für den einzelnen Teilnehmer. Aus dieser Grundannahme des Goffmanschen Anliegens leitet der Autor dessen anthropologischen Implikationen ab: "exzentrisches Schauspiel" als kulturtheoretische Fundierung, "situative Existenz" als phänomenologische Beschreibung und "Proto-Politik" als handlungstheoretische Verortung. Der Verfasser schließt daraus auf eine "dramatologische Perspektive" des Goffmenschen: Der Akteur erhandelt und erfährt das soziale Leben als Exzentriker, Existentialist und Politiker. (ICC)
