dc.description.abstract"in former times, a boat type known as the Trog (Cerman for trough) enjoyed particularly wide use on the lakes of the Schwalm-Nette region of the Lower Rhine. As late as the l980s isolated specimens of this type were still to be found. The Trog is a flat-bottomed, box-shaped vessel. The bottom and side planks as weil as the bow and stern transorns are oaken. Measuring ca. 4 m in length and ca. 0.8 m in width, these boats were generally built by joineries and mill construction shops which produced boats as a sideline. The vessels were purchased by fishermen, who used the Trog for their work, as weil as by farmers of the region. The latter employed the boats to transport hay, young reed cut in the springtime for cattle feed, and reed harvested in the autumn for the roofing of houses." (author's abstract)en
