Although Austria used to be a neutral country located between two blocs, the upheavals of 1989 also resulted in a number of changes in this respect. Austria’s foreign policy, which was strongly aligned with »Central Europe« throughout the late 1980s and directly after 1989, quickly turned more towards the West (EU). Nevertheless, results of an Austrian-wide representative opinion poll show that the population is not only in favour of intensifying contacts with the Middle-Eastern European neighbour states of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovenia in an economic and cultural sense, but they also want to see the concept of »Central Europe« being brought to life. However, language barriers create an obstacle for all forms of exchange. The people are in favour of learning other languages, but this has hardly been implemented in Austria at all up until now.
