(Autorenreferat)... view less

The aim in this article is to de velop an understanding of infrastructure as being shaped by the attempt to overcome constraints set by space and time. It is argued, that the aim of the built environment in the form of harbors, airports, railways, streets is to reduce the time needed to surmount distances between locations and markets. However, there is atension inherent in the built environment. In order to achieve accelerations in time, it is necessary to produce constantly new infrastructure and material settings - but every material setting implies to freeze cer tain levels of temporal flexibility. Therefore, while the produced built environment reduces barriers in time, it is at the same time contradictory to the tearing down of temporal barriers. A conse quence is the constant creative destruction and devaluation of the built environment in order to create a new, modernized spatial ensemble. An example for this tendency is the development of the harbor of Hamburg. (author's abstract)... view less
