Two ideological models are competing for post-Soviet nation building in the Republic of Moldavia: Romanianism and Moldavianism. While for Romanians Moldavia is (or should be) a part of greater Romania, Moldavians belabour Moldavia's national independence. The Romanian national ideology can rest assured it gets a great reception in areas normally used to define a nation (such as language, history and traditions). At the same time, the Moldavian point of view has asserted itself in most national debates and in national law. We investigated two Moldavian villages near the Rumanian border to demonstrate how things are for everyday people beyond the great narratives. In the issue of Romanianism vs. Moldavianism the findings are ambiguous, although the way this issue is interpreted throws a spotlight on the importance of a national identity for the persons from these villages. This research project will examine the thesis that subjects sometimes use national identities in a strategic fashion, even though they might lose importance in everyday affairs in comparison to other issues such as material problems.
