'Following the abortive coup by opponents of perestroika in August 1991, the Communist Party of the Soviet Union fell into deep disgrace and was banned; its political future appeared extremely uncertain. Today, almost five years later, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), which arose from the CPSU along with a number of smaller Stalinist formations, is suddenly at the focal point of interest. It came out of the December 1995 elections to the State Duma as the clear winner, and its chairman Gennady Zyuganov has a good chance of victory in the presidential elections scheduled to be held in June 1996. The present report examines the preconditions, the results, and the consequences of the communist come-back. Where lie the sources from which the CPRF draws its strength, what is the programme by which it is guided, which concrete behaviour patterns can be discerned, and how does it intend to shape its relations with the West? The study is based on the CPRF's own central documents, on articles by its chairman, and on analyses by Russian and Western scholars and journalists.' (author's abstract)... view less
