'The subject of this study 'Russia and the West' is without doubt one of the most relevant issues for contemporary Russia and its partners, for it is directly connected with the problem of 'choosing a path' which Russia faces in the current stage of transforming its political and economic system. Which path Russia ultimately chooses will to a great extent determine the world's future political landscape. A Russia isolated from the Western world, unable to overcome its technical and economic backwardness and lacking the impetus to modernize under the pressure of nationalistic zeal would, for reasons of a strategic nature, become one of the most explosive sources of global instability and of international tensions and conflicts with unpredictable consequences. In contrast, if Russia were to succeed in modernizing itself and forging a partnership with the West, it could make a significant contribution to making globalization a more harmonious and balanced process.'
