(Autorenreferat)... view less

"The process of education, integration into a peer group, finding an individual identity and becoming independent are all part of growing up. The disposition of money plays an important role in this process. Consumption requires money and enhances social integration. Students generally have no professional income and have to rely on benefits (pocket money and government transfer payments such as student loans) and side jobs. This article presents empirical findings on pocket money and the total available budget for the age group of 13 to 17 year old students. The distribution of the amount of pocket money and the available budget depends mainly on the age of the students. Other relevant factors include regional differences and the cultural and economic capital of the family. The quantity of available money is indicative of the varied opportunities for social participation. The everyday lives of young people is reliant on money and consumption, a fact that youth research must take into account." (author's abstract)... view less
