"Although ethnic German immigrants are the biggest migrant group in Germany, there is little research on their education patterns in general and on their educational participation in the transition from school to employment in particular. The following article seeks to fill this gap with a first, explorative and rather descriptive step based on data provided by the German Youth Institute transition panel. The focus rests on the so-called first threshold, the transition from school to vocational training. A combination of event history analysis and sequence pattern analysis has shown that although young ethnic German immigrants have the worst transition rates in acquiring a vocational training directly after school, they are able to disproportionately improve these by way of an additional year at a general education school or in a vocational preparation scheme."
