Die berufliche Situation von Sozialwissenschaftlern wird im vorliegenden Beitrag anhand des 'scientific use-file' aus dem Mikrozensus 2000 untersucht, um anhand einer kombinierten Analyse des Tätigkeitsfeldes der Dimensionen 'überwiegend ausgeübte Tätigkeit', 'Beruf' und 'Branche' einen umfassenderen Eindruck vom inhaltlichen Tätigkeitsspektrum zu vermitteln, als dies jede der drei Dimensionen für sich leisten könnte. Im Vergleich fällt auf, dass die Tätigkeitskategorien 'beraten, informieren' und 'künstlerische, journalistische, unterhaltende Tätigkeiten' für Sozialwissenschaftler einen höheren Anteil aufweisen, als dies für den Durchschnitt der Akademiker der Fall ist. Darüber hinaus ist die geringe Affinität zum 'forschen, entwickeln, gestalten' von sozialwissenschaftlichen Absolventen bemerkenswert. Im Rahmen einer multiplen Korrespondenzanalyse und mit Hilfe von (Re-) Klassifikationen des Mikrozensus lassen sich drei große Teilfelder im Tätigkeitsbereich von Sozialwissenschaftlern erkennen, welche in einer zweidimensionalen Grafik näher dargestellt und interpretiert werden: (1) 'Kultur, Verlage, Medien', (2) 'Bildung, Gesundheit, Soziales' und 'Hochschule und Forschung', (3) 'Verwaltung, Verbände, Privatwirtschaft' (mit Dienstleistungen).
