[Autorenreferat]... view less

"The term 'immigrant background' is frequently used today in discussions and publications
regarding immigration. The fact that this term is used as a matter of course creates the
impression that it is clearly and precisely defined. Using an analysis of the operationalizations
of 'immigrant background' in the Microcensus and in surveys and studies conducted by the
Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, the paper shows that this is not the
case.
It also explains the consequences that arise from this differences in quantitative and qualitative
terms. For example, different definitions can lead to different statements regarding, for
instance, educational achievement.
For this reason, this paper appeals to researchers and to users of studies to make the variables
they use in their work transparent. It also establishes this transparency for BIBB studies.
A key finding is that empirical VET research in the Federal Institute mostly uses current
nationality and mother tongue (or first language acquired) for determining an immigrant
background, and sometimes also place of birth and periods of life spent in Germany. Contrary
to studies using Microcensus data, BIBB surveys don’t ask respondents about naturalisation
and former nationalities." [author's abstract]... view less
