In dem Beitrag werden die aktuellen theoretischen Diskussionen der französischen Soziologie und ihre Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten abgeschätzt. Die relativ dauerhafte Struktur des Feldes soziologischer Produktion und die interne Entwicklung des Forschungspersonals sowie politische Faktoren, die in das wissenschaftliche Feld strukturierend eingreifen, stecken den Rahmen der Einschätzung ab. Indem die institutionelle, finanzielle und intellektuelle Entwicklung der französischen Soziologie dargestellt wird, werden einige Strukturelemente des soziologischen Feldes herausgearbeitet. Dabei wird deutlich, daß sich die inhaltliche Entwicklung der Soziologie in Schüben vollzogen hat, die in engem Zusammenhang mit ihrer institutionellen Verankerung stehen. Es wird festgestellt, daß stagnierende Finanzen kombiniert mit einer Zunahme des Forschungspersonals eine Orientierung hin zu qualitativen Methoden und die Integration des historischen Ansatzes in die soziologische Arbeit begünstigt haben. Anhand neuerer Forschungsarbeiten wird der aktuelle Trend in der Soziologie skizziert, der als eine wissenschaftlich streng objektivierende Schule bezeichnet wird. Es wird deutlich, daß trotz theoretischer Ausstrahlungskraft die Grenzen des soziologischen Feldes immer enger gezogen werden, weil anwendungsorientierte Arbeiten unter andere Disziplinen subsumiert werden. 'After discussing the institutional, financial and intellectual development of french sociology after 1945, this article tries to assess the present situation and development perspectives of the discipline. Stagnating finances combined with the increase in personnel on permanent research positions has favored an orientation towards qualitative methods and the integration of historical concerns into the sociologists tend to label themselves 'political scientists' and survey work is located in public administrations rather than in academic centers for excellence. The growing intellectual prestige of some sociological schools might well be linked to the discipline's isolation from outside clients and its incapacity to conquer a specific labor market outside academia.'
