"This contribution compares two different groups of public and private sector employees: on the one hand employees who are currently members of a works or staff councilor who used to be members of such interest representation bodies in the past; and on the other hand, employees without any experience as members of such bodies. The analysis is based on data provided by the Arbeitnehmer-MeinungsMonitor 2008, a survey commissioned by the Hans-Boeckler-Foundation. It reveals some important differences in terms of union density among both groups of employees. However, the statistical analysis also found little or no difference in the case of important individual characteristics such as employees' age, school education, and position in the company's hierarchy. Only small differences could also be found when comparing employees' political judgements and opinions in the field of measures to Fight unemployment, the development of the welfare state and codetermination rights."
