Mit 2,3 Mio. Einwohnern ist das Rhein-Neckar-Dreieck der siebtgrößte Verdichtungsraum
Deutschlands.

With a population of 2.3 million, the Rhine-Neckar triangle is Germany’s seventh-largest
agglomeration. In contrast to most other agglomerations, the Rhine-Neckar agglomeration
displays a polycentric structure and is characterised by its location at the point where three of
Germany’s federal states meet, namely Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate.
For the Rhine-Neckar triangle, demographic change means making a number of specific
adjustments, some of which are already apparent today. Although population development
is progressing relatively positively by comparison with other agglomerations, the region
is lagging well behind in terms of economic development. This is particularly true of the
industrial higher-order urban centres on the Rhine, where, in contrast to Heidelberg, another
higher-order urban centre, the secondary sector is still predominant. The future development
of the region is largely dependent on the extent to which it is possible to bind particularly the
more highly-qualified technical and managerial workforce to the region. This article also
describes the various types of regional co-operation already in place in the Rhine-Neckar
triangle showing how such co-operation is developing against the backdrop of demographic
change.... view less
