Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht am Beispiel der Notgemeinschaft 'Hilfe am Grab' die Möglichkeiten, sozial- und rechtshistorische Inhalte und Methoden in die Geschichte der Selbsthilfeeinrichtungen einzubeziehen. Analysiert werden dazu qualitativ und quantitativ die Akten der Versicherungsaufsicht für den Kreis Herford im 20. Jahrhundert, um so zu einem besseren Bild nachbarlicher Hilfe im Jahrhundert der Privatversicherung zu gelangen. Die Akten zeigen, daß die genossenschaftlichen Vorsorgemaßnahmen kleiner Leute, die sich im 20. Jahrhundert erneuerten, als moderne Sicherungssysteme versagten. Der permanente Konflikt zwischen den sozialen Initiativen und staatlichen Kontrollversuchen wird als Geschichte der Verdrängung und Veränderung nachbarschaftlicher Hilfe interpretiert.
