'What is analyzed is the way of dealing with conscientious objection in three German states. In this context, the reaction by state institutions to those ethnic-religious orientations and individual values as supported by opponents of war. For those people who refused generally binding orientations, values, and identifications the norms which were enforced by state institutions in the respective societies resulted in different consequences. The effects of state acting on those concerned allow conclusions on the structures of political rule as well as on the way in which the respective institutions worked.'
