(Autorenreferat)... view less

'By applying the term 'civil society' to the internal evolution of the GDR, the dynamics of its initial oppression, its partial re-development, as well as its explosive comeback and consolidation, are demonstrated. Despite the abolition of civil society structures by the Socialist Unity Party (SED), critical minorities developed who supported such values. In autumn 1989 a process of self-liberation followed, which also went along with a re-institution of forms of civil society. Partly, older institutions were reinstated, and partly new ones were created. With the founding of political parties, and the revival of parliament, a break with the civil society structures which developed during the Peaceful Revolution took place. Through the German unification, East German society was finally transferred into the existing civil society of the Federal Republic.' (author's abstract)|... view less
