'Within the context of an industrialised society, learning in institutionalized locations gains in importance mainly from the focus on the model of status passages organised by institutions. But this institutional structure of relevance becomes fragile through the structural change of the working society. Therefore the concept of biographical transitions, which is intimately connected with the perspective focused on coping, comes to fore. Based on this background the article presents the results of a research project. This study reconstructed the course of transitions in the life of young adults via biographical interviews. It becomes obvious that transitions follow a biographical and on coping oriented logic. Transitions therefore cannot simply be reduced to formal structures of education and work.'
