Archive pleasures or whose time is it?

Abstract

In diesem Artikel greife ich auf Erfahrungen zurück, die ich im Rahmen meiner Archiv-Forschungen am Harry Ransom Humanities Research Centre, University of Texas, Austin und mit den Archiven des Rodin-Museums in Paris gewonnen habe. Indem ich meine eigene Arbeit an den Briefen von Dora CARRINGTON und Gwen JOHN reflektiere, befasse ich mich mit der Frage, in welcher Weise Forschende Wahlen treffen, wenn sie mit Archivmaterial arbeiten: Was soll angesehen, behandelt und ggf. transkribiert werden? Diese Fragen berühren zugleich grundsätzlichere Themen wie das des Changierens zwischen Involviertheit und Distanz bzw. der Erfordernis, einen Übergangsraum zu schaffen, der sowohl Emotion/Nähe als auch Distanz/Reflexion eröffnet. Zudem hat meine Arbeit mich auf Phänomene aufmerksam gemacht, die ich unter dem Begriff "Heterotemporalität" theoretisch zu fassen versucht habe, d.h., dass die beforschte Vergangenheit und meine aktuelle Wahrnehmung so machtvoll miteinander verwoben sind, dass beides vitaler Anteil meiner Gegenwart als feministische Forscherin wird. Von hier ausgehend diskutiere ich auch, wie meine Arbeit mit Archivmaterial Möglichkeitsräume eröffnet hat, die Restriktionen der Gegenwart zu überwinden, und Schritte in eine offene und radikale Zukunft hat denkbar werden lassen, Chronotopoi feministischer Imagination.

In this article, I draw on my experience of doing archival research at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Centre, University of Texas at Austin and at the archives of the Rodin Museum in Paris. Reflecting on my experience of reading Dora CARRINGTON's and Gwen JOHN's letters, I address the problem of how a researcher makes specific choices while working in the archive: choosing what to see, what to note and even more what to transcribe. These are questions that relate to wider issues of how the researcher can oscillate between pathos and distance and create a transitional space that can accommodate both her involvement and her need for detachment and reflection. What has further emerged from my work in the archives is what I have theorized as heterotemporalities, space/time blocks where women's past is so forcefully contracted in my perception of the present that it becomes a vital part of my actuality as a feminist researcher. I therefore discuss how my experience of working in the archives has created conditions of possibility for transgressing the constraints of the present and has facilitated leaps into open and radical futures, constituting chronotopes of the feminist imaginary.

En este artículo abordo la experiencia de trabajo en investigación de archivo en el Harry Ransom Humanities Research Centre de la Universidad de Texas en Austin y en los archivos del Museo Rodin en París. A partir de mi experiencia en la lectura de las cartas de Dora CARRINGTON y Gwen JOHN, me ocupo del problema de las elecciones que un investigador realiza cuando trabaja en un archivo: elige lo que quiere ver, qué anotar y más aún qué transcribir. Estas son preguntas que se relacionan con cuestiones más generales acerca de cómo un investigador puede oscilar entre el pathos y la distancia y crear un espacio transicional que pueda acomodar tanto su implicación como su necesidad de distancia y reflexión. De mi trabajo en los archivos ha emergido lo que he teorizado como hetero-temporalidades, bloques de espacio/tiempo en los que el pasado de una mujer se contrae de una forma tan intensa en mi percepción del presente que se vuelve una parte vital de mi actualidad como investigadora feminista. Por ello planteo cómo mi experiencia de trabajo en los archivos ha creado condiciones de posibilidad para transgredir las constricciones del presente y ha facilitado saltos hacia un futuro abierto y radical, constituyendo cronotopos del imaginario feminista.
