"The study focuses on the supposed effect of an exceptional musical singularity, namely that of the chorus of the Beatles song 'She Loves You', produced in 1963. With the tools of musical analysis, the specific materiality of a 'grating major second' in this form of sound is demonstrated. In a second step, it is argued that such gratings or frictions were transformed into and used by a variety of commercially producible forms of communication. They generated consumption expenses, and thus the differentiation of an independent, globally emerging youth culture." (author's abstract)... view less
