From normal business to financial crisis ... and back again. An illustration of the benefits of Cassandre for qualitative analysis

Abstract

Cassandre ist eine freie (Open Source) Software für Textanalysen. Hierzu kommt ein halbautomatisches Kodierverfahren zum Einsatz, dem spezifischer Marker zugrunde liegen, die identifiziert und in "Registern" gruppiert werden, die wiederum analytische Kategorien repräsentieren. Bei der Suche nach den Ursachen der Finanzkrise wurden mehrere dieser Register generiert (Verantwortlichkeit, Fahrlässigkeit, Kaskadierung, Wandel und Normalisierung). Querverweise zwischen den Registern ergaben spezifische Kontraste (positiv und negativ) innerhalb der ökonomischen, politischen und Finanzsphäre. Varianzen betreffen beispielsweise Erklärungen für die Krise und postulierte Maßnahmen und Zielkriterien (von der Entwicklung neuer Methoden hin zu "zurück zur Normalität"). Das Beispiel der Finanzkrise wird in diesem Beitrag genutzt, um den Nutzen des halb-automatischen Kodierens mithilfe von Cassandre zu zeigen und zugleich auch auf einige Begrenzungen hinzuweisen, die negative Konsequenzen für die Analyse haben (können).

Cassandre is a free open source text analysis software tool. It uses semi-automatic coding, based on the identification of markers, grouped into registers, which represent analysis categories. Studying the causes of the financial crisis makes it possible to construct a series of registers (responsibility, negligence, domino effect, change and return to normal). Cross-referencing these registers reveals contrasting views (positive and negative) of the economic, political and financial spheres. These conceptions vary both according to how they explain the phenomenon and the measures that they advocate (ranging from the development of new methods to "getting back to normal"). The example of the financial crisis is an opportunity to discuss the benefits of semi-automatic coding and determine the limitations that are likely to impact negatively on the analysis.

Cassandre es una herramienta libre de fuente abierta para el análisis de texto. Utiliza codificación semi-automática, que se basa en la identificación de marcadores, agrupados en registros que representan categorías de análisis. Estudiar las causas de la crisis financiera hace posible construir una serie de registros (responsabilidad, negligencia, efecto en cascada, cambio y regreso a la normalidad). Las referencias cruzadas de estos registros revelan puntos de vista contrastantes (positivos y negativos) de las esferas económicas, políticas y financieras. Estos conceptos varían de acuerdo a como explican el fenómeno y las mediciones a las que apelan (que van desde el desarrollo de nuevos métodos hasta "volver a la normalidad"). El ejemplo de la crisis financiera es una oportunidad para discutir los beneficios de la codificación semi-automática y determinar las limitantes que puedan tener un impacto negativo en el análisis.
