Die Berechnung der Varianz von Populationsschätzern im Scientific Use File des Mikrozensus ab 1996
Calculation of the variance of population estimators in the scientific use file of the microcensus after 1996

'The Scientific Use File of the German Microcensus 1996 was the first to provide anonymized sample information necessary for calculating variances. The paper outlines the sampling design of the 1996 Microcensus and the selection procedure of the Scientific Use File. Following Särndal et al. (1992), a procedure is presented which uses the available design information to calculate the variance of Parameter estimates for totals, ratios, and means. The variance estimates based on the Scientific Use File are compared with results from the Federal Statistical Office. A regression estimator (group mean model) is presented for the post-stratification of the Microcensus estimates. Large differences between the post-stratified data and the unadjusted data raise the question as to which of the two Population estimates is biased. We then discuss the behaviour of the linear regression of the design effect, which is frequently used as a tool for variance estimation: In general terms this provides reasonable results, but in individual cases leads to either considerable over- or underestimation. The sample design information now available for the Microcensus means researchers no longer need to rely an such coarse approximations.' (author's abstract)|... view less
